Bhutan Currency

The official currency in Bhutan is known as Ngultrum or Nu. Another currency with a name Chhertum is also used at a low level. Currency notes are used widely in Bhutan as coins are not preferred in the country. Ngultrum or Nu is at par with Indian National Rupee (INR). Even Indian currency notes are accepted in Bhutan widely throughout the nation. Online money transfer or western union service is available in major cities like Paro and Thimphu only. You can exchange US dollarís and other foreign currencies in cities of Paro and Thimphu.

Always remember, that your major expenses are taken care of, as you have pre-organized and pre-paid for everything. The only expense would be shopping. Getting money exchanged is a slow process even at Thimphu. An ATM withdrawal is not possible in the remote areas of Bhutan. Hotels and emporiums only accept credit cards, but do levy a service charge.
